State Legislatures and State Supreme Courts throughout the Untied States have made changes to the laws concerning what type of legal services an attorney can provide to a client. Attorneys have been slow to change from the old ways of doing business because the old way is much more profitable. Simply put, in the past attorneys were not allowed to limit their represenation, which meant large retainers were charged in almost every case. Attorneys are now allowed to provide legal services to fit the clients actual needs and ability to pay.

The El Paso County Court handles more cases then any other Court in the state of Colorado. In 2003 Affordable Legal Services founder, Mike McCready, an attorney for over twenty years, was given permission from the Chief Judge and the Court Administrator of the El Paso County District Court to place notices in the Courthouse informing people of seminars he was presenting, which educated the public about what is referred to as limited legal representation. His experience and knowledge about this new type of legal service has been used to develop this website.
